Damp is a problem than can creep up on even the most immaculately built homes, and can can lead to physical damage of the property and, more importantly, can affect the health of the inhabitants.
In order to fix damp, it is unfortunately not as simple as slapping a coat of paint over it. It requires a professional assessment and the proper care to repair any existing damage and alleviate the chance of any future recurrence.
There are at least three types of damp that can be found in a variety of properties, and for all these a correct diagnosis is required because if diagnosed incorrectly it can actually do more harm than good:
- Rising Damp is caused by groundwater rising through capillaries in building materials and results in blistering of walls, peeling of wallpaper and paint.
- Penetrating Damp can be seen where patches are formed all over the inside of the exterior walls, in particular around doors and windows.
- Condensation is unconsciously contributed by the increased humidity from cooking, showering, drying laundry, boiling a kettle etc. Moisture condenses on cold surfaces and without sufficient ventilation mould then grows in bathrooms and kitchens which is harmful to your health.
